Since January of this year, I made a resolution to myself. And then did something crazy: I kept it. That resolution was to write a little bit everyday, so I picked the time from 7:30 am to 9:00 am to do my writing. This means getting up early. Going to bed early too. Yes, I have a job. I usually bike into that job around 10:00 am and then stay till 7 or 8pm, or really, however late I’m needed there. So this means my evenings are usually short and I’m really tried after a day at the office. What better time than the early morning to do a little bit of fiction writing? I’m slowly working towards the goal of getting published and I don’t mean my blog, but I see it as a stepping stone in that direction.
I used to write a series of short stories on this blog called Tales of a Mechanical Bird. I took that concept and reinvented it. I’ve created some longer stories out of it and that’s what I’ve been doing in the past 2-3 months. I’ve also developed some of my other ideas too. Now I’m spending time between writing Tales of a Mechanical Bird and trying my hand at flash fiction and short short stories with the hopes that I can get a story published somewhere other than my blog and maybe even turn a coin or two.
I also learned that I’m not alone in my pursuit of this crazy dream to write. Enter the Power Factory. Jonathan Munn (I believe that’s his name) runs the site and his manifesto is that he’ll write a new story every week because he has 90 spare minutes on his train ride to and from work. He’s written a couple so far, The Night Train, Under the Greenwood Tree, and Perfect Teeth are just to name a few. I’ve got his site on my RSS and I can check it whenever he writes a new story. You might want to check out his stuff too. They’re meant for young adults but have a horror bent to them. By far, my favorite is Under the Greenwood Tree. The use of language for description in that story is quite superb.
And so, I decided I’d take up the challenge of writing short fiction and posting it every week. You’ll probably see a lot of stuff here with a Science Fiction or Fantasy bent.
